Book Rec: The Golden Couple

Updated: Jul 31

“Sometimes, we need to look at our lives from a different angle to recognize the dysfunction and damage certain relationships are causing.”

From the dynamic writers Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen, who brought us The Wife Between Us, comes the next great thriller. Reminiscent of The Silent Patient and the film Unfaithful, The Golden Couple keeps you guessing with twists and turns throughout. What appears as couples’ therapy, quickly reveals deeper motives and a cast of characters wound together in more ways than one.

The Golden Couple Summary

a golden rose on the book jacket with title and authors listed

Wealthy Washington suburbanites Marissa and Matthew Bishop seem to have it all―until Marissa is unfaithful. Beneath their veneer of perfection is a relationship riven by work and a lack of intimacy. She wants to repair things for the sake of their eight-year-old son and because she loves her husband. Enter Avery Chambers.

Avery is a therapist who lost her professional license. Still, it doesn’t stop her from counseling those in crisis, though they have to adhere to her unorthodox methods. And the Bishops are desperate.

When they glide through Avery’s door and Marissa reveals her infidelity, all three are set on a collision course. Because the biggest secrets in the room are still hidden, and it’s no longer simply a marriage that’s in danger.

Discussion Guide (spoilers ahead)!

  1. Avery employs a unique style of therapy – the 10-session methodology. What do you think of this style? Would you consider hiring her for help?

  2. Marissa admits that she gave up a possible life for herself in her hometown to be with Matthew. Do you think she actually loved Matthew or just the idyllic life he could provide?

  3. Almost every character is deceiving someone. Have you ever felt deceived? How did you handle it?

  4. What assumptions did you make about Marissa and Matthew? What about Avery?

  5. Did you expect the ending? What surprised you the most?
