Book Rec: The Next Right Thing by Emily Freeman

A prayer: “Father, we ask for clarity, but we understand that’s not Your highest priority. Draw us close in our confusion, our doubt, and our questions. May we not work so hard to get rid of those things. Rather, may we let the questions and uncertainties pave the way to You. Help us to know when to say yes and when to say no. Give us the courage to quit when it’s time. We declare You are always enough. We believe it. Help us in our unbelief.”

At a time of transition in my professional career, this book helped me remember who is in control. I am a firm believer that God works no matter our path and He never leaves His children, and yet, I find myself wavering on my next steps. Emily’s book helped remind me that we are only called for the next right thing. We make progress in our faith, our trust and our obedience little by little. The Next Right Thing encourages us all to remain the presence of God.

Nothing gets our attention like an unmade decision: Should I accept the new position? Which schooling choice is best for my kids? How can I support my aging parents? When we have a decision to make and the answer isn't clear, what we want more than anything is peace, clarity, and a nudge in the right direction.

If you have trouble making decisions, because of either chronic hesitation you've always lived with or a more recent onset of decision fatigue, Emily P. Freeman offers a fresh way of practicing familiar but often forgotten advice: simply do the next right thing. With this simple, soulful practice, it is possible to clear the decision-making chaos, quiet the fear of choosing wrong, and find the courage to finally decide without regret or second-guessing.

Whether you're in the midst of a major life transition or are weary of the low-grade anxiety that daily life can bring, Emily helps create space for your soul to breathe so you can live life with God at a gentle pace and discern your next right thing in love.

About the Author

Hi, I’m Jordan. I’m originally from Destin, Florida, but have lived in Nashville, TN for 10 years. I started this blog in 2022 when I left my career in finance to take an adult gap year… yep, that’s right at 35 years old! Since then I have traveled to 65+ countries, most of the time solo. I lived in China for 4 years and have backpacked around the world. I like to stretch my budget for things like good meals and scuba diving, but ultimately the local experience is what drives me to explore. I love meeting new people and learning about other cultures, traditions and life lessons. Thanks for being here!
