Book Rec: The Flatshare

“Being nice is a good thing. You can be strong and nice. You don’t have to be one or the other.”

If you are looking for a light, feel-good romance novel, this is for you! O’Leary explores some hard topics in a heartwarming way with character depth and sweet moments of comedy. The Flatshare is a witty, appealing novel with loveable British characters.

Tiffy and Leon share a flat

Tiffy and Leon share a bed

Tiffy and Leon have never met…

After a bad breakup, Tiffy Moore needs a place to live. Fast. And cheap. But the apartments in her budget have her wondering if astonishingly colored mold on the walls counts as art.

Desperation makes her open minded, so she answers an ad for a flatshare. Leon, a night shift worker, will take the apartment during the day, and Tiffy can have it nights and weekends. He'll only ever be there when she's at the office. In fact, they'll never even have to meet.

Tiffy and Leon start writing each other notes - first about what day is garbage day, and politely establishing what leftovers are up for grabs, and the evergreen question of whether the toilet seat should stay up or down. Even though they are opposites, they soon become friends. And then maybe more.

But falling in love with your roommate is probably a terrible idea...especially if you've never met.

Discussion Guide (spoilers ahead)!

  1. Tiffy and Leon go from sharing pleasantries and leftovers to vulnerably sharing their lives. How does this vulnerability play into the narrative? Was there one character you related to more?

  2. It takes time for Tiffy to recognize the abuse from Justin. What signs did you see that pointed to the unhealthy relationship early on? How does her past relationship impact her relationship with Leon?

  3. Tiffy has a great support system in Mo, Gerty and Rachel, but Leon doesn’t seem to have close friends. Do you think his brother, Richie, provides the same type of emotional support?

  4. Do you think Tiffy and Leon would have ended up together if they had met under different circumstances?

  5. Who was your favorite supporting character? Richie? Mo? Mr. Prior?

About the Author

Hi, I’m Jordan. I’m originally from Destin, Florida, but have lived in Nashville, TN for 10 years. I started this blog in 2022 when I left my career in finance to take an adult gap year… yep, that’s right at 35 years old! Since then I have traveled to 65+ countries, most of the time solo. I lived in China for 4 years and have backpacked around the world. I like to stretch my budget for things like good meals and scuba diving, but ultimately the local experience is what drives me to explore. I love meeting new people and learning about other cultures, traditions and life lessons. Thanks for being here!
