Traveling solo can be a rewarding and empowering experience, but it’s important to prioritize safety. If you are embarking on a trip abroad, especially if you are a solo female traveler, take note of these tips and don’t be an idiot abroad. Also, read my post on my top 10 personal safety devices for your travel bag!
Do Your Research
Before you embark on your journey, take the time to research your destinations thoroughly. Look into the local culture, customs, and safety tips specific to each area. Websites like Lonely Planet, TripAdvisor, and local travel blogs can provide valuable insights. It’s also helpful to join online forums or social media groups for female travelers to get firsthand advice and recommendations. When you are in the country and have some travel flexibility, be sure to ask fellow travelers for their advice. If you are in a politically charged country, it can be good to know up-to-date travel tips and warnings.
Choose Your Accommodations Wisely
Opt for well-reviewed accommodations in safe neighborhoods. Consider staying in hostels or hotels that have a good reputation for security and are known to be welcoming to solo travelers. Websites like Booking.com and Hostelworld can help you find places with positive reviews and safety features such as 24-hour reception, lockers, and secure entrances. I love staying in dorm rooms with privacy curtains!
Stay Connected
Ensure you have a reliable way to communicate. Get a local SIM card or an international e-Sim with Airalo, my favorite company for worldwide coverage. Right now, when you grab an e-Sim, you can save 15% on your first eSIM with code NEWTOAIRALO15 and 10% on your next eSIM with code AIRALOESIM10. Share your itinerary with friends or family and keep them updated on your whereabouts. Apps like WhatsApp and Google Maps are invaluable for navigation and staying in touch with your support network.
Blend In and Dress Appropriately
Dressing modestly and blending in with the locals can help you avoid unwanted attention. Avoid flashy jewelry, expensive accessories, or clothing that might make you stand out as a tourist. Opt for comfortable and practical clothing that respects local customs and weather conditions. If you are traveling to a Muslim country, check out my post on what to wear here.
Use Trusted Transportation Options
Public transportation in foreign countries can be convenient, but it’s essential to be cautious. When possible, use reputable transportation services such as Uber or local taxi apps like DiDi. If you need to use public buses, book with trusted sites like Omio and try to travel during daylight hours on routes that are well-traveled. There are some cities like Mexico City and Rio de Janeiro that offer female only metro cars (or even bus sections) so take advantage of this added safety feature whenever possible!
Stay Alert and Trust Your Instincts
Always be aware of your surroundings and trust your gut feelings. If something feels off, leave the area or seek help immediately. Avoid walking alone at night in unfamiliar areas and stick to well-lit, populated streets. Consider carrying a whistle or a personal alarm for added security.
Health and Safety Precautions
Stay hydrated and protect yourself from the sun by wearing sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. Be cautious with street food; while many dishes are delicious, choose vendors with a high turnover of food to minimize the risk of foodborne illnesses. Bring a filtered water bottle for added protection in the drinking water. For all my favorite safety travel devices, check out my list here.
Engage with the Community
Interacting with locals can enhance your travel experience. Join group tours, like the free walking tours found through GuruWalk, or attend local events to meet people and learn about the culture. Many cities have women’s meet-up groups or expat communities where you can connect with other travelers. For me, I also find a local, English-speaking church on Sunday to engage with other Christian believers.
Stay Informed About Safety
Keep abreast of local news and any travel advisories from your government. The U.S. Department of State and the UK Foreign Office provide updates on safety conditions in different regions. Websites like SafeTravel or the Traveler’s Health section of the CDC can also be valuable resources. If you are American, register with STEP before your travels to be alerted of country notices and travel warnings.

Enjoy and Embrace the Experience
International travel is filled with vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, and friendly people. Embrace the adventure, try new foods, explore ancient architecture, and relax on beautiful beaches. With careful planning and a positive attitude, your solo travels can be an unforgettable experience.
Traveling solo, especially as a woman, requires preparation and awareness, but with the right mindset and safety precautions, your trip can be one of the best. These steps can help ensure a safer experience. Safe travels!
