Croatia is one of my favorite destinations in Europe. I was actually so sad when they joined the Schengen zone in 2023 because it meant my time there would be limited. The country is filled with a rich history and some amazingly stunning landscapes, especially along the coast and the national parks. From medieval towns to gorgeous waterfalls at Plitviče Lakes National Park, Croatia has something for everyone (not to mention the local wines and tasty foods). Compared to many other European destinations, it’s also affordable. As you prepare your trip, here are some things you need to know before visiting Croatia:
Currency
Although Croatia is a part of the Schengen zone, they don’t use the Euro. The official currency of Croatia is the Kuna (HRK). While it’s always best to have some local currency on hand, credit cards are widely accepted. For more information on the best debit cards for travel, read this post. If you are wondering about currency exchange, check out our post here. Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory. A general rule of thumb for great service is 10% (and is standard in restaurants).
Language
Croatian is the official language, but in tourist areas, we found many people speak English. We didn’t have any issues traveling around the country or communicating, but it’s always good to learn a few basic phrases (like “hello” or “thank you”) to connect with the locals and show your appreciation for their wonderful hospitality.
Public Transport
Croatia has a well-developed network of buses and trains. You can even island hop with their numerous ferries. For us, renting a car was the best way to explore the country and create our own custom Croatian road trip itinerary. If you rent a car, be aware that some roads can be narrow and windings, especially along the coast. Drive carefully or consider public transportation.
Food
Ah, I cannot say enough good things about Croatian food. It has influences from Italy, Austria and even Turkey. Be sure to try the black risotto, which is made with cuttlefish (not squid). We also really liked štrukli, a local pastry made from dough filled with cheese, almost like a cheesy lasagna. Other local dishes like Peka and Pag Cheese should be added to your list.
Safety
Is Croatia safe? Generally speaking, Croatia is a safe country for tourists. Croatia has a low crime rate, especially violent crime. We had no issues, but as always, it’s important to exercise caution at night and take care of your belongings in a crowded space. For more tips on how to keep your belongings safe, check out our post here. Remember, the emergency number in Croatia is 112, which can connect you to the police, fire services and medical assistance.
Weather
Croatia sits along the Adriatic Sea and enjoys warm, dry summers. The winters can be cold, especially in the capital or mountain areas. Temps can reach into the 90s in the summer, which makes it a perfect location for beach activities and island hopping but draws more crowds. September and October offer milder temperatures and fewer tourists. Pack layers or a wrap in the summer as the nights can be cooler. Visa
Depending on your nationality, you may need a visa to enter Croatia. For Americans, Croatia is now part of the Schengen zone so they are subject to the 90 days in 180-day rule. Starting mid-2025, the Schengen zone will require an ETIAS application prior to arrival. For more information about the Schengen zone, read our post here.
Tourist Attractions
Explore beyond Dubrovnik and Game of Thrones' hot spots which are overrun with tourists. Take advantage of Croatia’s natural beauty, with outdoor adventures. Head inland to visit Plitviče Lakes National Park and Krka National Park. Island hop to Hvar and Kornati. Dive into the country’s rich history in Zagreb and Split. Each place has its own charm, so try to explore as much of the country as possible.
Croatia’s mix of history, nature, adventure and culinary treats make it an unforgettable trip! By following these tips, you will be well-prepared to maximize your trip and create lifelong memories. Check out our 2 week Croatia road trip itinerary for more.
